Installation Guide for Polished Black Basalt

1. Site Preparation
Start by making sure the surface is clean, dry, and level. Remove any dust, loose soil, or old adhesive. For outdoor projects, a solid concrete base is ideal.
If you're working indoors, make sure the subfloor is stable and even.
2. Dry Laying
Before applying adhesive, lay out the basalt pieces without fixing them. This helps you plan the layout, match color tones, and reduce cutting later.
Basalt is a natural stone, so there may be slight variations in tone. It's a good idea to mix tiles from different crates for a balanced look.
3. Adhesive Application
Use a high-quality, flexible thin-set adhesive or stone mortar that's suitable for natural stone.
Apply the adhesive with a notched trowel on both the subfloor and the back of the stone (back-buttering). This improves bonding and reduces the chance of hollow spots.
4. Laying the Stone
Place each tile firmly into the adhesive bed. Tap gently with a rubber mallet to ensure full contact and alignment.
Leave 2–5 mm joints between tiles. This allows for thermal expansion and grouting.
Use spacers if needed to maintain even gaps.
5. Grouting
Wait 24 hours before grouting. Choose a neutral or matching grout color.
Apply grout with a rubber float and remove excess grout immediately with a damp sponge.
Avoid acidic cleaners, as they can damage basalt's surface.
6. Sealing
Basalt is naturally porous. After installation and drying, seal the surface with a penetrating stone sealer. This helps protect against stains, water, and fading.
For polished basalt, a color-enhancing sealer may be used to deepen the black tone.
7. Final Cleaning & Curing
Give the stone a gentle clean using pH-neutral stone cleaner. Let everything cure for 2–3 days before heavy use or placing furniture.

Tips
Polished surfaces can be slippery when wet, so it's better used in dry areas or sealed with anti-slip coatings if needed. Basalt is also naturally porous, so sealing it helps maintain the deep black color over time.
